FA Confirm League Allocations

The Football Association has confirmed the club allocations for Steps 1-4 of the National League system for the 2017-18 campaign.

This includes Step 2, the level at which Avenue will compete for the sixth successive season.

Mark Bower’s men will of course remain in the National League North, but there has been some changes to the overall make-up of the league.

Three of the relegated teams from the National League in York City, Southport and North Ferriby United have been allocated to the Northern division, while three teams promoted from Step 3 will also play against Avenue next season.

Blyth Spartans and Spennymoor Town have been promoted from the Northern Premier League, while Leamington ended two seasons in the Southern Premier League with promotion via the play-offs.

As a result, this left one team too many in the National League North, meaning the FA had to make a decision with which team to switch to the southern section of Step 2.

Gloucester City, who will play their home games at Evesham United’s Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium from the start of next season, have been moved to the National League South.

Tim Harris’ side surprised many last term, ending the season in 10th position, just 12 points outside the play-off places.

They completed the double over Bower’s Bradford team last term with two 1-0 victories.

Avenue’s longest journey will still however be to Brackley Town’s St James’ Park, which is 155 miles from the Horsfall Stadium.

Trips to Kidderminster, Leamington, Telford, Boston and Blyth are all also over 100 miles from Bradford’s home ground.

In other news, a team relegated last season in Worcester City have taken voluntary relegation down to Step 5.

The club finished third-bottom in the National League North last term, and confirmed they had applied for voluntary relegation in March despite continued attempts to avoid finishing in the bottom three.
