Match Report: Avenue 0-0 Chorley

Bradford Park Avenue made it three games unbeaten with a credible and hard-earned draw against Chorley.

Adam Boyes and Nicky Wroe both came close for Avenue either side of half time, but Chorley had the best chance of a close-fought contest, Matty Hughes going through on goal only for Steven Drench to deny him.

Wroe had the first sight at goal inside 10 minutes as he set his sights from 25 yards, but his well-struck effort was comfortable for visiting goalkeeper Matt Urwin.

Wayne Brooksby then had an effort saved as he headed Matt Hill’s cross goalwards, but Urwin dived to his left and was able to hold on with ease.

Avenue were creating a number of half-chances and Brooksby was on the end of the next one, as he got onto a Boyes knock-down and saw his well-struck volley deflect over the bar.

From the resulting corner, Adam Nowakowski kept the ball alive and his header dropped agonisingly across the area, Oli Johnson just unable to get a touch to divert it goalwards.

Chorley had their first decent chance of the game just before the half-hour mark, Marcus Carver finding Josh Wilson in the area but his volley flew over the bar.

Just one minute later, Avenue came oh-so close when Brooksby’s excellent cross was aimed towards Boyes, but he just couldn’t rise quite high enough and had to watch his glancing header drop just wide of the post.

Bradford then had to be alert as Wilson got to the by-line and his low cross left Drench stranded, but Luca Havern was there to clear well with Carver ready to poke the ball home.

After half time, Wroe worked Urwin even harder, as his 20-yard strike was destined for the top corner but the on-loan goalkeeper dived brilliantly to tip it over the bar.

Brooksby was on hand to deliver another teasing cross 10 minutes later, and Urwin came off his line to claim the low delivery with Nowakowski poised to shoot.

Chorley had the ball in the back of the net twice in a minute with just 10 left on the clock, but in the first instance the referee had long before awarded the visitors a free kick and play had come to a halt.

Then from the resulting delivery, Andy Teague headed in after some pinball, but a clear foul on Drench was spotted and Bradford were handed a free kick.

The away side then squandered a huge opportunity to snatch all three points.

Substitute Hughes was played in behind and with the home defence left in his wake, his finish was weak but Drench stood his ground and did well to keep it out.

The game petered out and ended goalless, meaning Bradford took four points over Bank Holiday weekend following Saturday’s 4-1 win at Telford.

Next up for Avenue is a trip to Stockport on Saturday (2 September), followed by an away match at Gainsborough on Tuesday (5 September). Those games are followed by a home double header against Nuneaton (9 September) and Boston (11 September).
