Match Report: Stourbridge FC 2-1 Bradford Park Avenue

Match report Stourbridge FC 2-Bradford Park Avenue 1

Bradford Park Avenue were knocked out of The Buildbase FA Trophy as Stourbridge FC caused a cup upset at the War Memorial Athletic Ground.

Mark Bower made one change from the draw at the Horsfall Stadium. Nicky Clee dropped to the bench and Javan Vidal was given a start.

The best chances of the half fell to Stour. Luke Benbow was causing plenty of problems for the Avenue defence and it was from a set-piece, he nearly broke the deadlock. The striker struck an excellent right-footed effort from 25 yards forcing Steven Drench into a superb fingertip save. From the corner, the Avenue stopper made an even better save to deny Leon Broadhurst from close range.

The pressure continued, but Drench was equal to any cross that came his way. Then, the Avenue nearly snatched an opening goal.

Midfielder Jamie Spencer found plenty of space down the right wing, and his teasing delivery was, somehow, missed by everyone.

The Avenue were made to pay for their failure to score as Stour took the lead after the break.

A long throw-in was aimed towards striker Kyle Perry, but the ball deflected off Avenue defender Shane Killock and past Drench into the back of the net.

The hosts could’ve doubled their advantage as Benbow’s cross was nodded down by Perry into the path of Broadhurst, but the unmarked midfielder headed the ball over from close range.

Then, Mark Bower’s men seemed to get a bit of momentum and were unfortunate not to equalise after attempts from midfielder Nicky Wroe and Oli Johnson were saved by Matt Gould.

And, then the home side scored a vital second goal. Left-winger Luke Shearer ran through a gap in the Avenue defence and calmly slotted the ball past a beaten Drench from 12 yards.

Five minutes later, the Avenue halved the deficit with a fortunate goal. Striker Adam Boyes got hold of a loose ball inside the box and, after good footwork, took the ball around Gould and tapped the ball into an unguarded net.

It was certainly game on in the final 15 minutes as the Avenue pushed forward in the search of an equaliser. Once again, Wroe ran onto a pass from his teammate Clee, but his driven shot deflected just wide.

With full time approaching, Stour could’ve wrapped up the game but Benbow, Perry and Broadhurst were denied, once again, by the excellent Drench.

And then, with only seconds left, the final chance for the Avenue fell to winger Wayne Brooksby, but he fired a right-footed effort across the face of goal.
