Bradford Park Avenue have confirmed Alex Meechan as the club’s new head coach with immediate effect.
Meechan, who has been caretaker assistant manager since March, will work alongside Terry Dolan, the club’s Director of Football, and their first priority is to sign up a number of players they have been in talks with over recent weeks.
Although Alex was born in Plymouth, his family hail from Bingley and have had links with both Bradford clubs over the years, so it is a proud time for him and for his family and he is happy to be in Yorkshire.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for me,” Meechan said. “I know it is not going to be easy but the work starts now.
“We really need to lift the supporters, who have been anxious about all the uncertainty in pre-season.
“A lot of planning has gone on behind the scenes and Terry and I will now be acting swiftly to strengthen and prepare the team for the season ahead.”
Meechan came to the club in March as assistant to caretaker manager Darren Edmondson, with whom he had worked at Barrow since May 2013. Avenue finished the season in 14th position in the Vanarama National League North.
“It’s a great time to be part of things, with all the plans for more community involvement and youth development,” Meechan continued.
“All of that really needs to happen, for the club and for the city of Bradford, and I feel privileged that I’ll play a key part in that.”
Director of Football Terry Dolan said: “We have been impressed by the work they’ve done and we are pleased that Alex has committed to us in a permanent role.
“We would like to thank both Alex and Darren for helping us over the past few months and we wish Darren well for the future.”
Meechan, 36, had three spells with Forest Green Rovers during his footballing career, as well as spells with a number of other clubs, including Dagenham & Redbridge, Halifax Town, Chester City, York City, Stalybridge Celtic, Worcester City and Colwyn Bay.
He had his first coaching opportunity with AFC Telford United from March 2013 and moved to Barrow shortly afterwards, where he had been until the opportunity at Avenue three months ago.
