#ProperBradford Spotlight: Lewis Knight

posted in: News | 0

Phil Baki | Special Assignment to BPA

“If you’re enjoying your football, the goals and assists follow naturally.”

The sentiment from Bradford (Park Avenue) striker Lewis Knight is simple but rings true. That echoes Lewis’ ability. The 20-year old’s approach to the game is simple and lethally effective. In the 2018/19 campaign, Knight tallied six goals and 14 assists, claimed a National League North Team of the Weekend award and showed what a force he can be going forward as Bradford look to challenge its way in to the National League. His ability to run onto balls in behind the defence and use his pace to his advantage, is an age-old striker archetype but one that he has perfected. His journey to Bradford was not quite as traditional though and his experiences have given him even more perspective on what playing for Bradford could mean for the team and for him.

Lewis Knight is a product of Leeds United’s Academy where he was the captain of the U-18’s in his final season with the club. Leeds provided an environment that is extremely competitive but also conducive to high level development. Knight added, “At Leeds if you’re good enough, you’re old enough. The expectation is that the best players will get their opportunity with the senior team.” This idea might seem extremely obvious in England, but when Lewis left Leeds and went to Marshall University in the United States, he encountered a different mindset. “College football was a different game. Older players were more likely to play and the focus was not so much on winning as it was on giving the time to the guys who had been around the team.” Despite this, Knight made 19 appearances, scoring nine goals and three assists in 2017, his only season in the US before heading back home to return to English football.

Some might not understand the decision to leave college, but for Lewis, the decision to come back to England was easy. “Playing men’s football [as opposed to college], it’s about winning. The style of play is somewhat similar in that a lot of teams play physically at this level, but the amount I’ve learned being back in men’s football is immense.” The ability of a young player to come to a club like Avenue as a developmental stop is an approach that is heavily favoured by the club’s directors, Gareth Roberts and Jonathan Collura, and Lewis fits that vision perfectly. Lewis has felt those benefits already, “I do see it as a stepping stone. Being with the club has helped my game an awful lot. Playing at this level allows us to fight for results and allows me to learn from the more senior members of the squad.” The approach of the club, signing players with the intent of moving them on to the next level will certainly benefit the players, but the expectation is that the club will benefit from their quality as well. The club is expecting to feel the impact of Knight’s involvement this season.

This preseason has featured some great matchups for Avenue fans to be able to see how the team is shaping up, and Lewis feels the group is on the right track to have a great campaign. “The team looks fit, everyone is running for each other and offering options for each other,” Knight added. The group is having to gel quickly under the new management team of Garry Thompson and Shaun Gardner and Knight believes that the squad can hit the ground running despite the change in management. “[Mark Bower and Garry Thompson] are very different managers in training, but the style of play, getting the ball on the ground and playing football, is similar and I think we can have a bright start since we are used to the style.” This approach also favours how Knight prefers to play as evidenced by his goal and assist return last season. He continued, “Holding onto the ball and making the opposition chase gives me opportunities to get behind the defence. I want to be that bright option at forward who will stretch the backline and create opportunities for myself and my teammates as I did last season.” The excitement around the team, especially in the wake of the closely contested Tom Banks Memorial Trophy match against Bradford City, is well-deserved, so how high does Knight see the club going this season? “Promotion is always the aim. You hope you can start well and then grind out results that keep you in the picture, then anything can happen. As for his personal goals for the season, Knight added, “I want to stay healthy and enjoy the football. Play the full 42 match season, really see what it takes to be involved the entire season and be an option for selection for every single match.” As he said, “the goals and assists will follow naturally.” If Knight can remain available all season, his impact will no doubt be felt. Avenue fans will be hoping that Knight and the team can improve on last year’s finish, which saw them finish 7th and suffer a 1st round exit in the playoffs with a 1-0 loss to Spennymoor.

Lewis Knight’s journey to Avenue gives him plenty of motivation to succeed and ultimately move to a higher level, but he is still invested in #ProperBradford. “We hope [the motto] integrates into the ethos of the club and ultimately gets as many people behind the club as possible.” The promise of this season for the club and Lewis should be reason enough to get behind them now.

Vanarama National League North fan preview: Bradford (Park Avenue) supporter Ryan Burston gives us the scoop on his team

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

What does the new season hold for Bradford (Park Avenue)?

A brand-new management team and squad that has a strangely exciting feel to it! Hopefully the team can start with a bang at Curzon and kick on from there.

There seems to be a much more community feel around the club this season, more than in previous years. How important is it to have someone like Garry Thompson at the helm who knows the city so well?

Very important. He knows the area and seems to understand what the fans are after in terms of players that will work hard and involvement with the fans. Hopefully having Garry at the helm will get more Bradford City fans through the gates too.

What bit of business has impressed you the most?

I’d probably say work that has been done by the club off the pitch, changes to the ground and some high-profile sponsors for the first time in years shows we are moving in the right direction.

It seems a long time since the season finished – what’s changed since then?

A lot! It’s hard to say with so much change but I’m not sure anything will really be the same. Hopefully we will still make the play-offs.

Who will catch the eye for you this season?

Lewis Knight. I know he was at us last year too but he’s a quality player who will be massive again for Avenue this season.

Are there any stand-out candidates for promotion?

It’s such an open league that anybody can be up there. Spennymoor would be my tip.

What away day are you most looking forward to?

Gateshead for the simple reason I’ve never been.

And what game would you like to win more than any other any why!

Guiseley away – always has a derby feeling to it. Love winning there.

If you could steal one opposition player, who would it be?

I’d have to say Connor Branson, he was great for us last year and we will miss his input.

Predictions time – where do you think you’ll finish?

Mid-table but hope for more. Who knows, anything can happen.

Bradford (Park Avenue) A.F.C vs Huddersfield Town F.C

1st Half

Bradford came under pressure almost immediately with Bennett being forced into a early save in the 3rd minute. However, it wasn’t much longer until Huddersfield made the breakthrough after Bennett brought down Elliott in the box forcing the referee to give a penalty which was duly dispatched giving the away side a 1-0 lead.

Bradford then struggled to get a foothold in the game up until the 21st minute when Holmes through ball found Rathbone just on the edge of the area who’s shot found the bottom corner to level the game.

Park Avenue then had to hold on again with blocks from Lund and Rathbone in the 23rd and 26th minutes keeping the scores level. Scott High was then put one-on-one through in the 28th minute against ‘keeper Jack Bennet who came out on top meaning that both sides went into break level.

2nd Half

Bradford started the second half brightly carving out numerous chances and having the majority of the possession. In the 66th minute Park Avenue had a trio of chances which they unfortunately didn’t manage to finish.

In the 76th minute the breakthrough finally came when Cresswell powerfully headed home from a corner swung in from the left to give Avenue a 2-1 lead.

Bradford looked like they were going to see out the win until the 89th minute when Tim Akinola struck late on for the visitors seeing honours even at the end of the game.

Bradford (Park Avenue’s) next game comes on Saturday the 3rd of August where we will kick off the season, away at Curzon Ashton.

Our next home game is against local rivals Guiseley, on the 6th of August, another Tuesday night clash. Certainly a game you will not want to miss.

Bradford (Park Avenue) A.F.C 0-0 Bradford City (Bradford City win 3-2 on penalties)

Tom Banks Memorial Trophy

Penalty shootout sees Bradford City come out as winners in the Tom Banks Memorial Trophy

The game saw both sides push each other till the very end with it coming down to penalties to decide the victors. Despite the result Bradford (Park Avenue) it was another good pre-season performance from Garry Thompson’s side as they managed to match the efforts of their League Two counterparts.

1st Half

The first half saw both sides match each other in terms of possession, with City just edging out the Avenue in terms of the amount of chances they created, however they failed to make any of this count.

The first chance of the game came in the 10th minute when Gardner reacted quickly to get his effort on target which was subsequently saved O’Donnell in the Bradford City goal.

Andrew was then called into his first real action of the day when his quick-fire double saves saw him deny Wood and Anderson to keep the scores level.

Due to hot conditions the night both sides agreed to a water break in the 20th minute, allowing the players momentary respite from the heat.

The half didn’t really pick up much from that point with City managing a few efforts, none of which were really any trouble to Andrew. They came closest in the 44th minute, however good defending by Croft saw the oncoming shot blocked to keep it 0-0.

2nd Half

Bradford (Park Avenue) came out much brighter in the second half with Holmes’ effort hitting the bar after he was played in Hurst. Gardner also came close again with another shot on target which was unfortunately palmed over by the keeper.

After a collision in the box in the 71st minute, the referee award a penalty to Bradford City. Ismail stepped up to take the spot kick, but he saw his effort hit the post before finally being cleared, much to the delight of the Avenue faithful.

Bradford (Park Avenue) did have a couple more chances in the second half however none of these were enough to test O’Donnell in the oppositions goal, leading to a penalty shootout.

Penalties

Former Bradford City player, Garry Thompson stepped up to take the first penalty which he put away with ease however it wasn’t until the 6th penalty until the net was found again with Bradford City drawing the shoot-out level after three penalties each. Croft then saw his effort go wide, while Morris managed to put his away to give City the lead as it moved onto the final penalties. Holmes stepped to level the tie at 2-2 however it wasn’t enough as Staunton put away his penalty giving City a 3-2 win in the shootout.

Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC 3-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Garry Thompson’s men see out the first victory at Horsfall this season!

1st Half

The game got off to a slow start with both teams seeing an equal share of possession but neither side managed to carve out any clear-cut chances.

This trend continued up until the 19th minute when some good play down the Avenue right saw Gardner pick up the ball 25 yards out from goal and get fouled in the process. Ben Hedley then stepped to convert an expertly executed free kick, placing it in the top right corner to give Avenue a 1-0 lead.

Bradford then doubled their lead in the 29th minute through another free kick. The ball was played about around the Wednesday area before the Trialist managed to get a shot off. The Sheffield Wednesday keeper then made a decent save which fell as far as the on waiting Moran who reacted quickest to prod the ball home and double Avenue’s advantage.

Wednesday then managed to win a penalty in the 38th minute which was slotted home from twelve yards by Hunt to half the visitor’s deficit, meaning that Bradford went in 2-1 up at half-time.

2nd Half

Much like the first half, the second half started quietly with neither side being capable of breaking down their oppositions defence.

In the 70th minute, Bradford managed to breakthrough again through a Trialist. Gardner had a shot, which was deflected across the goal to the Trialist who smashed it home to give Park Avenue a 3-1 lead.

In the 73rd minute, Andrew produced a brilliant save to preserve Bradford’s second-half clean sheet, which they ultimately managed to do with Sheffield Wednesday failing to make a breakthrough in the second half.
