Bradford (Park Avenue) extended their record-breaking unbeaten start to the league season to 15 matches with a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at Consett AFC on a foggy Saturday afternoon.

Prior to kick off, the free-scoring Steelmen had netted 27 times in eight games at Belle View Stadium and looked set to add to that tally inside the opening seven minutes. Avenue goalkeeper Declan Lambton produced a superb close-range save to deny Donny Holdsworth, but the rebound fell kindly to Oli Thompson, who stroked the ball into an unguarded net. However, the home celebrations were cut short when the assistant referee raised his flag for offside.

Consett continued their bright start and were rewarded with the opening goal of the afternoon thanks to a stunning strike from Isaac Walker. In the 26th minute, the attacker picked up possession some distance from goal before unleashing a fierce, dipping effort into the top corner, leaving the impressive Lambton with no chance.

In the 35th minute, the hosts passed up a golden opportunity to double their advantage. Holdsworth beat the offside trap to find himself in acres of space, one-on-one with Lambton, but the Consett attacker could only fire a wasteful side-footed effort wide of the target.

Bradford struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half, but words of encouragement and a tactical shift in fornation from manager Craig Elliott during the interval appeared to have the desired effect, as the visitors emerged for the second period with considerably more intensity. Within three minutes of the restart, the Avenue’s attacking pressure sparked a goalmouth scramble, with the ball eventually being hacked clear off the line by the Consett defence.

Just two minutes later, the visitors threatened again. Marcus Carver created space down the left before delivering a cross that deceived goalkeeper Harry Moss, only to bounce off the upright and out for a goal kick.

The Avenue continued to press for an equaliser, with Louie Chorlton going close in the 55th minute. A ball from the left found its way through to the Bradford winger, whose powerful effort looked destined for the back of the net before Moss produced a strong save at his near post.

With Bradford throwing caution to the wind in their pursuit of an equaliser, Consett began to pose a threat on the counter-attack and almost put the game beyond Avenue’s reach in 63rd minute. A low effort from Holdsworth took a wicked deflection, but Lambton produced an outstanding reaction save with his trailing leg to keep the visitors in the contest.

Consett would come to rue their missed opportunities as the Green Army’s persistence finally paid off with an equaliser from Marcus Carver eleven minutes from time. The Avenue striker, whose tireless work had caused the hosts problems throughout, found space inside the penalty area before driving a low finish beyond Moss to restore parity. The goal was a fitting reward for Carver’s continued endeavour, with the forward getting his name on the scoresheet for the first time since August.

As the game entered its closing stages and the fog continued to descend around the stadium, both sides pushed in search for a winner. The Green Army thought they had snatched all three points in the 87th minute when another clever move down the left saw the ball played across the face of goal to Ben Andreucci, who fired home from close range. However, the celebrations were cut short as the Avenue substitute was adjudged to have strayed narrowly offside.

Such was the end-to-end nature of the contest, Consett threatened once more. However, the hosts were denied by two crucial blocks from Charlie Winfield, who had put in an impressive shift covering the right side of Avenue’s defence in an unfamiliar position throughout the second half.

In the end, the points were shared in what was a fair reflection of the balance of play, with Consett having enjoyed the better of the first half before Bradford responded with an improved performance after the break. Belle View Stadium has proved a difficult place to visit this season, particularly against a side with such an impressive goalscoring record on home soil, making the point a valuable one for the Green Army.

The result extends Avenue’s record-breaking unbeaten start to the league campaign to 15 matches, although Dunston’s 3-1 victory at Ossett United sees Bradford drop to second in the table. Focus will now turn to Tuesday evening’s trip to Morpeth Town, where Craig Elliott will be boosted by the return of Connor Brown and Jameel Ible from suspension, knowing that a win at Craik Park would take Bradford back to the summit of the Northern Premier League East Division.
