New Avenue Book Set To Be Released This Year

posted in: News | 0

Fifty years have now passed since Bradford (Park Avenue) were embarking on their final campaign in the Football League, to be voted out at the end of the season by the other member clubs following a fourth successive application for re-election.

The opening game against Aldershot at Park Avenue was won 2 – 0 but that turned out to be one of only six League victories that season. Another year spent propping up the rest of the League as the bottom-placed club proved to be one too many for a side which had once graced the First Division and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.

In Bradford, the rivalry between Avenue and City was intense, coming to a head each derby day, of which there were 52 in total, with Avenue just edging them with 21 victories to City’s 20.

While all that remains of the original Park Avenue football stadium is part of the field, and terracing long since overgrown with vegetation. It was there that the final act was played out as Avenue spent three of those last four years entrenched at the bottom of the League. The ultimate penalty for having to seek re-election was administered in 1970 when Cambridge United obtained more votes at the annual meeting and took their place.

A new book soon to be published, ‘Diary of a Lost Cause – Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC 1966-1970’, records the final four years of the club in the Football League. Covering all the day to day news, match reports, statistics, analysis and opinion, it also contains substantial present-day interviews with personalities involved at the time. These include former Avenue player and Director of Football Terry Dolan, Kenny Hibbitt who had a very full playing career and became a legend at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bobby Ham who served both Bradford clubs with distinction, and the late captain and manager Don McCalman, amongst many others. Each of these Avenue men have their own tale to tell which reveals an unfolding human story among all the strife.

Avenue supporter and author Jeremy Charnock has this to say about the five years he has spent diligently researching his subject: ‘Writing the book has been a thoroughly rewarding experience, not only in re-living season by season all the trials and tribulations, but in meeting and interviewing the many Avenue men who gave all they could in what was ultimately a lost cause. Their memories help to bring the period alive again and are the perfect compliment to the rest of the book. I hope readers will take pleasure in following these personal journeys and find the book a worthwhile tribute to the club, its staff and its supporters.’

A limited edition, it is available only through ordering in advance by the revised date of 30 September. To ensure you don’t miss this opportunity for an early Christmas present, for details email j.charnock@btinternet.com or write to the author, Jeremy Charnock, at 22 Rylands Avenue, Bingley, West Yorkshire BD16 3NJ. Names of subscribers will be printed in each copy and a launch night is expected in November. The price of the book in hardback format is £25 (+£5 postage where applicable) for around 400 pages of nostalgia.

An earlier book on the club, ‘The Avenue – Bradford Park Avenue Pictorial History and Club Record’ by Malcolm Hartley and Tim Clapham was responsible for the enthusiasm which led to the present club being re-formed after the passage of fourteen years. Should the current book spark anything like a similar wave of interest, it could prove a shot in the arm as the club searches for the extra support needed to make the next step up the football pyramid.

Vanarama’s August Assessment

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

League sponsors Vanarama have been busy compiling their August Assessment

It’s been a good month for….

Alfreton Town – Billy Heath admitted himself that his side was lacking last season and he made a number of changes over the summer. And although they might have taken a few games to get going, it was worth waiting for! One win in the first half of the month but maximum points from the second. New signing Amari Morgan-Smith seems to have found his rhythm which is making the rest of the league sit up and take note of the Reds.

It’s been a bad month for….

Garry Thompson and Marc Richards – The management pair were given their marching orders from Bradford (Park Avenue) and Hereford respectively. Thompson lasted just two games in charge of the Avenue but was relieved of his duties after back-to-back 5-0 defeats. Richards’ tenure came to an end after his first defeat of the season to King’s Lynn.

Star performer….

Aaron Martin – They say one man doesn’t make a team, but Guiseley frontman Martin is testing the old saying to its limits. With a haul of ten goals, Martin has notched over half of the Lions goals so far this season as the West Yorkshire outfit enjoyed a fine start to 2019/20 – Sergio who?

Surprise package….

King’s Lynn Town – Not many will have predicted the rise of the Linnets so early on, but Ian Culverhouse didn’t read the script. Since losing their opener, only Brackley Town have taken even a single point from them – with eye-catching wins against Hereford, AFC Telford and Darlington the pick of the bunch.

Standout result….

Farsley Celtic 3-1 Darlington – Not many would’ve given the Celts a sniff against Alun Armstrong’s new-look Darlington side. But the new boys showed they weren’t here simply to make up the numbers and found themselves two goals ahead inside 17 minutes! Jimmy Spencer put them three up ten minutes before the break, meaning Adam Campbell’s second-half striker was merely a consolation.

Focus on – Bradford (Park Avenue)

After a tough start that saw Garry Thompson leave after two games, Marcus Law seems to be heading in the right direction with his new side. After picking up their first points of the season at Gateshead, a draw with Blyth Spartans was quickly followed with a first win at Darlington – both games bringing much-needed clean sheets in the process. The month ended on a sour note however with defeat to AFC Telford – there’s plenty of time left!

Stat-Attack

Record – L-L-L-D-L-D-W-L

Goals For/Against – 4/21

League position – 21st

Top scorer – Lewis Knight (2)

Match Report: Bradford Park Avenue 2-3 AFC Telford United

Avenue twice drop points and suffered late heartbreak against AFC Telford in a highly entertaining game at the Horsfall Stadium on Saturday.

Two goals from Brenon Daniels and Adam Walker undid the good work that the side had shown in the previous game. The final outcome, a 3-2 home defeat adding fresh concerns to Marcus Law about his side’s defensive frailty that harshly saw Park Avenue leave home with nothing.

Looking to build on their first win of the season against Darlington on Monday, Park Avenue started the brighter of the two sides with two chances in quick succession falling to Lewis Knight in the Telford six yard box.

Knight continues to impress at the club and showed early glimpses of why Law is keen to play him in the middle rather than out wide, busting a gut to chase numerous attempted through balls.

Nelson Digbeu had another hugely impressive opening at the back. Tall, quick, combative and comfortable on the ball under the pressure, he ticks a lot of boxes for Marcus Law at the back.

Whilst Park Avenue where playing with the confidence and relentless drive carried over from the Darlington game in the opening quarter, the games first goal came in the 28th minute from Daniels, who had a simple tap in at the far post after a lapse in defence had seen Avenue fail to deal with a cross into the box.

The goal which came against the run of play, seemed to immediately stir Avenue into fightback mode and less than ten minutes later, they had drawn level at 1-1.

Park Avenue’s first goal at home this season and of the game came from an exciting passage of play. Lewis Knight controlled a superb 60-yard ball in space from Riccard Calder to advance inside the Telford box and slip the ball inch perfect past Telford goalkeeper, Andrew Wycherley, who was caught in a one on one situation.

Knight had read the cross, broken free and could not miss. It was a moment of brilliance from the young Bradford forward, who continue to come of age at the Horsfall Stadium.

Seconds after Knight had equalised for Park Avenue, Marcus Dinanga had for forced a corner for the visitors, but Taylor was on hand to deal with a mad scramble to recover the ball in the Avenue box.

However, moments before the break Telford punished Bradford again, this time from Walker, who had the space and time to strike the ball past Taylor from 20 yards out into the Aveneue net to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at the interval.

The second half began with Bradford in the ascendecey, wrestling the momentum back and Knight saw a chance float inches over the Telford bar.

Bradford continued to push hard with Isaac Marriot, Brad Dockerty, Jaheim Headley and Alex Hurst all continuing to shine.

A defence-splitting past from Marcus Wood had put Dockerty through and the young forward took the ball on the right foot and fired a shot that Wycherley fumbled but recovered.

Bradford could then sense the game was there for the taking, adopting a gung-ho attitude as they went for the jugular trying to draw level.

To their credit and endeavour, they did just that for the second time in the match after they broke at pace from deep with Calder mirroring the earlier effort from Edwards, sending a 20-yard rocket past a static Wycherley into the roof of the net to send the Horsfall Stadium into wild celebration.

Bradford sensed three points were on the horizon but just couldn’t find much joy after that moment of magic from Calder as the game entered the final ten minutes.

Queue more defensive chaos in the Park Avenue box, a frustrating feature of Park Avenue’s campaign so far this season as Telford snatched victory with only minutes remaining through Daniels’s second goal of the game.

Avenue undone by a curling cross from Aaron Williams which connected with Daniels, who had somehow beaten six defenders in the 18-yard box.

Rhys Taylor had no time to react as he and the rest of the Park Avenue players on the pitch could only watch in disappointment as the ball rolled painfully over the line to give Telford three points in a thoroughly entertaining advert for the National League North.

Fans Forum Follow Up

posted in: News | 0

Following the weekend’s Fan’s Forum, the club would like to thank all those that submitted questions and those who attended.

To follow up for those that could not be present, we have published the statement below to address some of the key questions that have been asked.

Questions about the budget and financial position of the club:

The club continues to operate at a substantial deficit.  Last season, much like those prior, the club lost hundreds of thousands of pounds.

To conceptualise this, last season, the club net of all funding (including gate, club shop, donations, partnerships, etc), lost £20 per head on each individual who attended a match at Horsfall.

This season, the club expects to continue to operate at a deficit and substantial loss.  This is due to a decline in income despite making some budget adjustments.

The deficit continues to be wholly funded by the Board of Directors on a monthly basis.  Ultimately, this is why the club is looking at new ways of funding, including a suitable academy setup and additional stadium usage.

Questions about Gareth’s intent:

Gareth wants to win.  That said, he cannot continue to throw away hundreds of thousands of pounds attempting to do so.  There are dozens of examples of English clubs with unsustainable bases who have attempted to do so.  Right now, he is focusing on the season at hand and getting the club back to being competitive.  In addition, he is focusing on the changes needed at Horsfall Stadium and alternative income streams at the club to drive the club towards sustainability.

Questions about Horsfall stadium:

The club is currently in discussions to make significant changes to Horsfall Stadium.  These discussions include the independent Horsfall Trust.  The aim is that Horsfall becomes a community focused stadium, with consistent community use.  Specific details of the changes will be disclosed in due time, but are due to include a new perimeter fence, change facilities and seating.  It should be noted that the council will have final say on all changes to the stadium and that any lease is non-transferable.

Questions about the management of the club:

Gareth Roberts is managing the team of Marcus Law, Mark Leadbeater and Carl Marsden.  No one else is involved in the day-to-day decisions and business and football management of the club.  The football side is wholly managed by Marcus Law.  The directors have input on Board level decisions only and are not involved in any of the day-to-day decisions.  The club secretary, Colin Barker, handles all league and club communications and administration and should be commended on the amount of time that he gives the club.

Thank you again to all who support the club, it’s with your help and commitment that we drive forwards to build a sustainable and competitive club. A further follow up will follow later this week with specific questions answered in a summarised FAQ format.

Joseph Chidyausiku Joins The Squad

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

The club would like to welcome Joseph Chidyausiku back to the Horsfall Stadium.

Chidyausiku, an attacking player, spent time last season with Havant & Waterlooville. He first came to the Horsfall in pre-season and featured against Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday, scoring against the latter.

Speaking about the signing, interim manager Marcus Law said:

“Joseph came to us during the summer before going on to train elsewhere. He’s coming in on a non-contract basis and we’re going to take a look at him to see if he fits into our plans for the team. He looks to have some of the attributes we’re seeking so now it’s down to him to earn a place in the squad and go from there.”

Myron Gibbons Arrives On Loan

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

Gibbons graduated from Doncaster Rovers academy and signed a first year professional contract with the club earlier this year after impressing enough to be noticed by the then first team boss, Grant McCann.

An attacking player with plenty of pace, Gibbons caught the eye of Marcus Law in a closed door friendly earlier this week.

He joins Bradford in time for today’s game against Blyth Spartans.
