Match Report: Avenue 2-4 Morpeth

Bradford (Park Avenue) crashed out of the FA Cup with a frustrating home defeat to Morpeth Town.

Riccardo Calder had equalised after Joe Walton opened the scoring, but new signing Dan Sweeney missed a crucial chance, with Sean Reid firing the visitors in front moments later.

Josh Heaton was sent off for two yellow cards just after the hour, and Reid fired his second from the resulting free-kick to sink Bradford. Walton added his second late on before Brad Dockerty – who twice struck the woodwork – added a consolation, his third goal in three games.

Avenue were afforded a great chance to open the scoring with less than five minutes on the clock, as the referee adjudged Morpeth to have played a backpass, but from the indirect free-kick Calder could only fire the ball over the bar.

And with their first foray into Bradford’s third, the visitors took the lead through Sean Reid.

Captain Wayne Phillips played in Liam Henderson, who controlled the ball and managed to hold off both Mitch Lund and Rhys Taylor, before finding Joe Walton who finished confidently into the bottom corner.

Calder was causing a lot of problems down the left, and he got on the end of a long ball, his near post effort well saved by Dan Lowson.

Moments later, Avenue struck the woodwork through the in-form Brad Dockerty. He picked up a pass from Marcus Wood and worked some space in the area, his low, left-footed strike cannoning off the foot of the post.

And finally all Avenue’s possession and pressure paid off as Calder levelled the scores on the end of a fantastic move.

Bradford advanced down the left and the full-back played a brilliant one-two with Sweeney before finishing brilliantly into the bottom corner with a powerful finish.

Sweeney should have doubled the advantage with Avenue on top, Alex Hurst doing brilliantly down the left before cutting back for the Solihull loanee, but he planted his first time finish wide of the post from just six yards out.

Just three minutes later, Bradford were made to pay as Morpeth regained the lead. Sean Taylor picked up a loose ball on the right and delivered a teasing cross to the back post which Reid powered into the net with his head.

Avenue had the first sniff of a second half which started much scrappier than the first, Lewis Knight latching on to Hurst’s ball over the top, but a good tackle from Chris Reid denied the shooting opportunity.

And from the resulting free kick, Reid brilliantly fired the ball into the top corner, giving Taylor absolutely no chance.

The goal and sending off killed off Avenue’s hopes of a comeback, with quality dropping as Marcus Law threw players on chasing a goal.

Dockerty struck the post for the second time with just over five minutes to play, getting in on the right with his shot across goal tipped onto the woodwork, before Ryan Cresswell completely fluffed the rebound.

The visitors then struck the frame of the goal themselves, as Taylor beat away Shabz Mohammed’s free kick, with Jack Foalle heading the loose ball onto the bar.

Walton added his second and his side’s fourth with two minutes to play, taking aim from range with his shot possibly taking a deflection which wrong-footed Taylor and saw the ball nestle in the bottom corner.

Pretty much straight from kick-off, Avenue pulled one back, Dockerty doing well on the left before angling a shot into the corner across the goal with his weaker foot, but it was a mere consolation.

Sweeney Joins On Loan

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

Bradford (Park Avenue) have completed the signing of Dan Sweeney on loan from Solihull Moors.

Sweeney, who can operate either as a striker or a winger, joins on an initial one-month loan deal from the National League side.

The 21-year-old joined Solihull last summer, scoring just four minutes into his debut for the Moors.

He spent time on loan at Hednesford Town and Leamington, after graduating from the Kidderminster Harriers academy.

Dan goes straight into Marcus Law’s squad for Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Morpeth Town at the Horsfall Stadium.

Meanwhile, central defender Nelson Digbeu has left the club. We would like to place on record our thanks to Nelson for all his efforts in an Avenue shirt, and wish him all the best for the future.

Vanarama stat attack! The history books have some good news for Bradford (Park Avenue)!

posted in: News | 0

League sponsors Vanarama offer some answers about the actual importance of the start to the season

Fear not, Bradford (Park Avenue) fans – we have some news that might make a tough start to the season taste a little bit sweeter.

Believe it or not, there are a few stories to tell of years gone by that prove the season might be about to turn a huge corner – let us explain.

This time last season, Blyth Spartans found themselves in a similar position. They were fourth from bottom with ten points to their name – where did they finish? In the play-off places!

That’s not all. Last season also showed that the Avenue absolutely love back-end of the calendar year. From the end of September until the very end of 2018, Mark Bower had masterminded eight wins, four draws and just a single defeat.

If Marcus Law can get that that same tune from his players, it could be about to take off in West Yorkshire.

Managers often say it, players too, but does blazing a trail from the off actually have any bearing on where you finish?

The answer? Not exactly.

Stockport County and Chorley were the sides lucky enough to snare a place in the National League last season, but that’s only half the story.

You might have been laughed out of Edgeley Park if you’d mentioned title talk in mid-September last season – but they quickly ate into the deficit to take the ultimate prize.

Chorley conceded a nine-point cushion between themselves and second, settling for the lottery of the play-offs to get up.

In the 2016/17 season, Harrogate were well in touch with top-spot after 11 games but couldn’t buy a win not long after – winning just eight games for the rest of the season and finishing six places and 17 points adrift of the top seven.

Sponsors Vanarama have recently launched the Club Reward scheme to help fans back their club’s budget. Every time a fan takes out a brand new van lease with Vanarama or a brand new car lease with Motorama their club will earn £100 and you will receive £30 cashback!

New Avenue Book Set To Be Released This Year

posted in: News | 0

Fifty years have now passed since Bradford (Park Avenue) were embarking on their final campaign in the Football League, to be voted out at the end of the season by the other member clubs following a fourth successive application for re-election.

The opening game against Aldershot at Park Avenue was won 2 – 0 but that turned out to be one of only six League victories that season. Another year spent propping up the rest of the League as the bottom-placed club proved to be one too many for a side which had once graced the First Division and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.

In Bradford, the rivalry between Avenue and City was intense, coming to a head each derby day, of which there were 52 in total, with Avenue just edging them with 21 victories to City’s 20.

While all that remains of the original Park Avenue football stadium is part of the field, and terracing long since overgrown with vegetation. It was there that the final act was played out as Avenue spent three of those last four years entrenched at the bottom of the League. The ultimate penalty for having to seek re-election was administered in 1970 when Cambridge United obtained more votes at the annual meeting and took their place.

A new book soon to be published, ‘Diary of a Lost Cause – Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC 1966-1970’, records the final four years of the club in the Football League. Covering all the day to day news, match reports, statistics, analysis and opinion, it also contains substantial present-day interviews with personalities involved at the time. These include former Avenue player and Director of Football Terry Dolan, Kenny Hibbitt who had a very full playing career and became a legend at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bobby Ham who served both Bradford clubs with distinction, and the late captain and manager Don McCalman, amongst many others. Each of these Avenue men have their own tale to tell which reveals an unfolding human story among all the strife.

Avenue supporter and author Jeremy Charnock has this to say about the five years he has spent diligently researching his subject: ‘Writing the book has been a thoroughly rewarding experience, not only in re-living season by season all the trials and tribulations, but in meeting and interviewing the many Avenue men who gave all they could in what was ultimately a lost cause. Their memories help to bring the period alive again and are the perfect compliment to the rest of the book. I hope readers will take pleasure in following these personal journeys and find the book a worthwhile tribute to the club, its staff and its supporters.’

A limited edition, it is available only through ordering in advance by the revised date of 30 September. To ensure you don’t miss this opportunity for an early Christmas present, for details email j.charnock@btinternet.com or write to the author, Jeremy Charnock, at 22 Rylands Avenue, Bingley, West Yorkshire BD16 3NJ. Names of subscribers will be printed in each copy and a launch night is expected in November. The price of the book in hardback format is £25 (+£5 postage where applicable) for around 400 pages of nostalgia.

An earlier book on the club, ‘The Avenue – Bradford Park Avenue Pictorial History and Club Record’ by Malcolm Hartley and Tim Clapham was responsible for the enthusiasm which led to the present club being re-formed after the passage of fourteen years. Should the current book spark anything like a similar wave of interest, it could prove a shot in the arm as the club searches for the extra support needed to make the next step up the football pyramid.

Match Report: Avenue 1-1 Spennymoor

A late equaliser from Adam Boyes denied Bradford (Park Avenue) a second win of the season against Spennymoor Town.

Former Bradford striker Boyes netted in the fifth minute of second half stoppage time to cancel out Brad Dockerty’s opener – his second in two games.

Avenue were left to rue missed chances as Lewis Knight could have had a hat-trick, but visiting goalkeeper Matthew Gould was in fine form.

Josh Heaton was brought straight into a line-up which also included a returning Rhys Taylor and Dockerty, following his goal off the bench last time out at Boston.

Avenue started quickly, winning a corner within 13 seconds, but it was the visitors who had the first attempt at goal, Andrew Johnson cutting inside, but his curled effort flashed past the post.

Law’s side were picking up a lot of loose balls and sloppy moments from the Spennymoor midfield, and one of those allowed them to grab the opener.

Marcus Wood picked up a loose ball and drove forward, waiting for the perfect moment to draw the defender out and slip in Dockerty, who just about managed to squeeze his shot under Gould and into the back of the net.

New signing Heaton was making a clear difference at the back, and he was called upon to make a key block as Johnson latched onto a long throw, with the ball looking destined to ripple the back of the net.

Then it was Taylor, returning after sitting out two games with a calf injury, who needed to be at his best, doing brilliantly to tip over as James Roberts struck powerfully towards the top corner from a tight angle.

Spennymoor started to see more of the ball but couldn’t get through a stern Avenue formation, and it was actually the hosts who should have extended their lead just before the break.

The hosts got a corner cleared and Wood played a brilliant ball over the top to Lewis Knight. His touch was excellent to take him through one-on-one with Gould, but his low finish was weak and was denied by the goalkeeper’s outstretched leg.

And Gould foiled Knight once more just after the interval. Avenue broke in numbers, led again by Wood, and he slipped in the winger whose powerful strike was acrobatically tipped over the bar by the visiting goalkeeper.

Knight was left disappointed though when he finally beat Gould, latching onto a brilliant Alex Hurst pass, and an excellent first touch saw him get past the goalkeeper, but he could only find the side netting with his finish from a tight angle.

Moments later the visitors came oh so close to drawing level, as Andrew Johnson met a corner with a thumping header which rattled the crossbar.

Taylor then had to be alert to tip away Johnson’s effort and the ball almost fell for Boyes, but it got stuck under his feet and Avenue scrambled it away.

The goalkeeper made a good double save denying Roberts and Johnson, before the pick of the bunch with 10 minutes left on the clock.

A shot had come in from Johnson and substitute Gavin Cogdon flicked it on from inside the six yard box, but Taylor reacted phenomenally to tip the ball over the bar.

Bradford were clinging on as Spennymoor had a huge number of late corners, Taylor tipping over from Nathan Buddle, and the sickening equaliser eventually came in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

A high ball in was headed down by Robert Ramshaw, and Boyes was unmarked six yards from goal, free to prod the ball past a helpless Taylor and rescue a point for the visitors.

Avenue Swoop For Heaton and Johnson

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

Bradford (Park Avenue) have moved to add defender Josh Heaton and striker Andre Johnson to their squad.

Central defender Heaton joins from National League North rivals Darlington, while Johnson last featured for Boston United last season.

Heaton, who has featured seven times for Darlington this term, in fact became St Mirren’s record signing last summer, following his participation in Jamie Vardy’s V9 academy.

The towering defender, now 22, never settled north of the border and spent the second half of last season on loan at Kidderminster, before returning to Darlington in the summer.

He came off the bench in the first half as Avenue picked up their only victory of the season at Darlington’s Blackwell Meadows two-and-a-half weeks ago.

Johnson, meanwhile, has been brought in to fill a big void in the attacking area, with centre-back Ryan Cresswell playing in attack for most of last weekend’s defeat at Boston.

The 23-year-old actually last lined up for the Pilgrims, making 16 appearances last season while also spending some time at Hednesford Town.

He joined Boston from Alfreton last summer, having also played in the National League North for Corby Town before that.

Both Johnson and Heaton go straight into contention for Avenue’s home match against Spennymoor Town this Saturday, with Marcus Law’s men looking to get off the mark with a first home win of the season.

Meanwhile, defender Alex Laird has left the club by mutual consent. We would like to thank Alex for his efforts with the club and wish him all the best for the future.

Match Preview: Spennymoor (H)

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

Bradford (Park Avenue) are looking to build on the positives as they return to action this Saturday against Spennymoor.

Avenue were unlucky to come away with nothing to show from last weekend’s trip to in-form Boston, a quickfire double for the hosts sinking Marcus Law’s men to a 2-1 defeat.

It was a third loss in a row, following home defeats to Telford and Farsley, which followed on from Bradford’s sole win of the season at Darlington.

Jon Moran sat out the defeat with tonsilitis, while goalkeeper Rhys Taylor was still absent as he treats an ongoing calf problem which had been affecting him during a number of matches including the win at Darlington.

His replacement Jack Bennett made up for his Farsley error with a controlled performance at Boston, and it remains to be seen whether the youngster will be called upon again this Saturday.

Law has been busy reshuffling his squad, with a number of departures last week, and is hoping to add at least one name ahead of the weekend.

A striker is high on his priority list, after Ryan Cresswell was deployed in an attacking role at Boston last week.

For Saturday’s visitors, however, they come armed with ex-Bradford striker Adam Boyes and winger Ben McKenna, with the former netting in Spennymoor’s 5-0 victory over Blyth Spartans on Tuesday night.

After work on their Brewery Field ground overran from the summer, The Moors have been playing catchup following a handful of postponements.

They actually sit just two positions above Bradford in the league table, pulling away with Tuesday night’s victory – one of their rearranged matches.

The match kicks off at 3pm at the Horsfall Stadium, with the ground open from midday for the beer festival taking place all weekend.
