A first-half penalty from Claudio Ofosu separated Kettering Town and Bradford (Park Avenue) at a sunny Latimer Park on the opening day of the Vanarama National League North.
The game’s only goal happened following a foul from Oli Johnson on Ofosu inside the box. The winger got back up and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Despite the hot conditions, it was an entertaining first-half with both sides having chances.
The Avenue troubled the Poppies, but Johnson’s strike from 14 yards flew over.
Minutes later, the Bradford dugout appealed for a penalty. After being put through from Isaac Marriott, Luke Rawson’s low shot from 16 yards was saved by the legs of goalkeeper Rhys Davies. The ball spun into the air and as Jake Hibbs was quick to rise highest to head the ball towards goal, the midfielder went down inside the box as Davies failed to catch the ball. The referee Richie Watkins waved the Avenue protests away and awarded a goal kick.
Then, it was the Poppies, who looked dangerous from set-pieces and long throw-ins, who were awarded a penalty. Ofosu tried to take the ball around Johnson, who stuck out his left leg and made contact with the winger. The referee blew his whistle and pointed to the spot. Ofosu got back on his feet and sent Avenue goalkeeper Johnny Saltmer the wrong way to the delight of the home supporters.
Before the half-time whistle, Paul Cox’s side hit the woodwork as defender Luke Ward smashed a volley against the crossbar from close range.
The visitors responded with an opportunity to equalise. But, after a fine delivery from Hibbs found captain Luca Havern, the defender’s header went inches wide of the post from 12 yards.
After the break, both managers made substitutions, with few attempts on goal.
But, with being behind the scoreboard, the Avenue pushed forward in the later stages of the game and somehow, failed to hit the back of the net.
Firstly, a low volley across the box from Havern found makeshift left-back Mitch Lund, but the defender blasted the ball over from 12 yards.
With the final whistle approaching, Johnson saw a left-footed effort cleared off the line from eight yards. From the rebound, new signing Akeel Francis did well under pressure to get a header on target, but the ball crashed off the underside of the bar.
Into additional time, Mark Ross saw a cross deflected by Rhys Sharpe strike the top of the crossbar and away from danger.
Seconds later, the referee blew the full-time whistle as the Poppies held on for a narrow victory.

Tickets to the Hereford game, this Saturday 21st August are on sale now. As previously advertised, tickets will cost £14.00 for adults, and £10.00 for concessions. Students, with a valid ID will be able to enter for just £5.00, the youth bracket of 12-17 year olds will cost £3.00 whilst under 12s will be allowed in for £1.00.

We caught up with Mark earlier in the week and asked for his views for the 2021/22 Season;
We’re looking forward to the new season and playing in games with fans, it feels like such a long time since that happened. We did well last season but it never felt the same without the supporters.
The expectation from outside, from what I’ve seen, is we’ll be at the bottom of the league! We know we’ve got some good players in our dressing room, with a mix of experience and youth. We have young players, who, if they fulfil their potential, can be exciting players for the club. It’s our job to go out there, be competitive and pick up results.
We want to get going now. It’ll be tough and there’ll be difficult times during the season. But if we stick together as a team, as a club, then we can enjoy good days here and reach our objectives and continue to be established in this division
We are happy to announce, that following an aborted start last season, this coming 2021/22 season, all of our junior players will receive a free season ticket! We will also be offering a free season ticket for a guardian.
The club have already started handing out the season tickets, with over 150 juniors already in possession of their tickets.
Operations Manager Calum Cullen – I am delighted to finally be able to get this scheme off the ground. The Junior section is a huge part of this football club, and this scheme shows that.
When I came into the club, I wanted to make sure that we included all aspects of it together. Bringing the juniors back into the club was the first part of that process and now the season tickets are the next part.
We want the younger generation to be able to come in and see the first team play, knowing that the very next day, they will be putting on the same kit, and representing the club themselves.
Academy Manager Chazz Mann – This is a great initiative to get the future players of Bradford (Park Avenue) into the ground to watch the boys play. What a great way for the juniors to have a connection to the first team, and to be inspired to be the next generation of the Green Army!

We shall be running another Fantasy Premier League this season.
Our Pep Guardiola for 2020-21 was Jordan Tindall with his team Melted Cheese FC and our Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was Matt Ray with Sliced Bread FC.
Our wooden spoonist was Joseph Brown with his team Wednesday Avenue. Fortunately for Joseph there is no relegation. He’s going to be better than that this time round.

We are delighted to announce the signing of striker Luke Rawson from Chesterfield. Luke has been with us all pre-season, and spent part of last season on loan at the Horsfall.
Speaking on the transfer, Luke said ‘I am really happy to be signing for Bradford (Park Avenue), and I cannot wait to get the season underway. I am looking forward to working with Mark, Danny and all the boys as we strive to have a good season’
Mark Bower, had this to say: ‘Luke will be a great addition to our squad and is another young player looking to advance his career with us.
He plays with good maturity and we are confident that, with a good run of games with us, he can fulfil his potential and be a valuable asset to us.’
