Matchday Preview: Bradford (Park Avenue) vs Carlton Town

Date: Tuesday, 15th October 2024
Kick-Off: 7:45 PM
Venue: Horsfall Community Stadium

Bradford (Park Avenue) prepare to welcome Carlton Town in a crucial Northern Premier League East Division clash under the lights at Horsfall Community Stadium. Both teams come into this fixture with a close gap on the recent form table, and with points at a premium, this encounter promises to be a competitive affair.

Current Form Table:

Bradford (Park Avenue) have been on an impressive run, currently sitting at the top of the form table with 15 points from six games. They are in fine form, having won five of their last six matches, including a 3-1 win over Grimsby Borough and a recent 2-1 victory against Sheffield on the 12th of October. Paddy Sykes and Ben Blythe were on the scoresheet for the Avenue in that match, continuing their excellent form in front of goal.

Meanwhile, Carlton Town have also shown moments of quality but have been inconsistent in their last few outings. Carlton are positioned 5th on the form table with 13 points from six games, following a strong 3-0 win over Consett AFC in their most recent match. Alex Howes, Dean Freeman, and Liam Moran were the goal scorers for Carlton in that encounter, underlining their attacking threat.

Head-to-Head:

This will be a tightly contested match, as both teams are vying for a top-four finish. Bradford (Park Avenue) have demonstrated strong home form this season, winning three of their five matches at Horsfall. Carlton, on the other hand, have proven to be a dangerous team on their travels, with three wins and a two losses from five away matches.

Key Players to Watch:

  • Paddy Sykes (Bradford PA): The in-form striker has been a consistent goal threat, netting key goals in recent fixtures, including the opener against Sheffield. His movement and finishing make him one of Bradford’s most dangerous players.
  • Ben Blythe (Bradford PA): A rock at the back, Blythe is also capable of contributing with important goals, as shown in the Sheffield match.
  • Lamin Manneh (Carlton Town): With 7 goals this season, Manneh is Carlton’s leading scorer and will be the main man Bradford’s defense must contain.
  • Dean Freeman (Carlton Town): Scoring in the last match against Consett, Freeman is a versatile player who can provide solidity at the back and is a threat from set-pieces.

Final Thoughts:

With Bradford (Park Avenue) sitting at the top of the form table, Craig Elliott’s men will be aiming to consolidate their position with another home victory. However, Carlton Town pose a significant challenge and will be eager to close the gap at the top of the table. This match has all the makings of a thrilling encounter, with both sides possessing the quality to make a difference on the night.

Expect a high-intensity, end-to-end game as two of the division’s strongest sides go head-to-head at Horsfall Community Stadium.

Match Report: Bradford (Park Avenue) 2-1 Sheffield FC

Venue: Horsfall Community Stadium
Date: Saturday, 12th October 2024
Competition: Northern Premier League East Division

Bradford (Park Avenue) made it four wins in a row with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sheffield FC on a rainy afternoon at Horsfall Community Stadium. Goals from Paddy Sykes and Ben Blythe were enough to secure the win, despite a late effort from Sheffield’s Bradley Beatson to reduce the deficit.

First Half:

The match started on a scrappy note with neither side able to create any significant chances in the opening minutes. It wasn’t until the 13th minute that Sheffield posed their first threat, as Connor Cutts delivered a dangerous cross that was expertly cleared by Mark Beevers. Bradford responded swiftly, with Sonny Whittingham’s volley flying over the bar after capitalizing on a poor clearance by Sheffield keeper Edd Hall.

As the half progressed, both teams began to find their rhythm. Sheffield had a golden opportunity in the 20th minute, but Reece Fielding’s free header sailed wide, much to Bradford’s relief. Dan Francis was fouled just outside the box in the 30th minute, but the resulting free kick was well defended by Sheffield.

The breakthrough finally came five minutes from half-time when Paddy Sykes reacted quickest after Jack Normanton’s effort was parried by Hall. Sykes made no mistake from close range, slotting home to give Bradford a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Second Half:

Bradford came out with confidence in the second half, creating chances early on. Connor Shanks and Whittingham linked up beautifully in the 53rd minute, with Shanks firing just wide of the post. The hosts continued to apply pressure, and it paid off in the 70th minute when Ben Blythe doubled the lead. Myles La Bastide’s free kick was pushed out by Hall, but Blythe was on hand to bundle the ball over the line, making it 2-0.

Sheffield responded by making a string of substitutions in the closing stages, but Bradford continued to control the match. Joe Crosby came close to adding a third goal in the 85th minute, only for his shot to be deflected wide for a corner.

Late Drama:

With the clock winding down, Sheffield managed to pull one back in the 89th minute. Bradley Beatson headed in from a set piece, reducing the deficit to 2-1 and setting up a nervy finish for the hosts. Bradford defended resolutely in the final moments, and despite six minutes of added time, they held on to secure another crucial victory.

Manager, Player & Director Reactions:

After the match, Bradford’s First Team Manager Craig Elliott was delighted with the team’s performance, saying:

“Always happy to win games of football. It’s been a good week for us, four wins on the trot and three wins this week. The only disappointment was conceding at the end – it would have been nice to have four clean sheets in a row, but I can’t complain too much. The conditions were tough, and I’m really happy for the lads and the way we played.”

Sporting Director Thomas McStravick also praised the team’s progress under Elliott, adding:

“The gaffer has put his stamp on the group, and we are moving in the right direction. It’s great to see so many people smiling around the club. A lot of football to be played and plenty of ups and downs ahead of us. Tuesday will be a very tough game, but we’re looking forward to it.”

Final Thoughts:

This victory marks Bradford (Park Avenue)’s fourth consecutive win, solidifying their position at the top of the Northern Premier League East Division. Despite conceding late, the team will take confidence from their recent run of form as they prepare for Tuesday’s clash against Carlton Town.

James Hanson announces his retirement from Football

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC regretfully announces the retirement of experienced forward James Hanson, who has decided to hang up his boots following an illustrious career in both professional football and Non-League. After a long and successful playing journey spanning over 18 years, Hanson leaves an indelible mark on the sport and Bradford (Park Avenue).

James Hanson joined Bradford (Park Avenue) in March 2024, and quickly became a favourite around the Club and in the dressing room, known for his aerial prowess, work ethic, and leadership both on and off the pitch.

He also started and ended his managerial career at Bradford (Park Avenue), claiming a 100% win record during the interim period with a 3-1 win over Grimsby Borough.

Over the course of his career, Hanson made over 547 senior appearances, and scoring over 143 goals, including memorable spells with Bradford City, Sheffield United, and Grimsby Town, among others.

His ability to score important goals, especially during his time at Bradford City, made him a household name and earned him a special place in football history.

Speaking about his decision, James Hanson said:

“Just want to say a big thank you to the fans and everyone connected with the club, it wasn’t a decision I took lightly but it was a struggle to combine both jobs, and ultimately my job at Peckover Transport comes first now.

“It wouldn’t have been fair to stay and not be fully committed to training and matches especially when there are lads making training and not being in the squad.

“I will be down occasionally between now and the end of season to support the boys in their bid for promotion straight back to the NPL Premier Division.”

First Team Manager Craig Elliott also added this on Hanson’s departure:

“He has had a career to be very proud of, and I am gutted that unfortunately he couldn’t balance his work life to continue playing football.

“He has been brilliant since I came in, but I fully understand and respect his decision to retire.”

Bradford (Park Avenue) would like to extend our deepest thanks to James for his contributions to the club and for the memories he’s provided to fans across the Green Army and beyond.

Bradford (Park Avenue) return to the Horsfall Community Stadium tomorrow afternoon, hosting Sheffield FC in what promises to be another exciting Northern Premier League clash. Craig Elliott’s men come into this fixture riding high on a run of four consecutive wins, including a dominant 3-0 victory away to Stocksbridge Park Steels midweek. Currently 8th in the table with 16 points, Avenue will look to keep their excellent form going as they take on a Sheffield FC side that sits 21st with just 5 points.

Recent Form:

Bradford (Park Avenue) have been outstanding in recent weeks, securing back-to-back clean sheets and showcasing attacking power in front of goal. Key performances have come from Myles La Bastide, who scored two goals against Stocksbridge, and Paddy Sykes, who netted his second league goal of the season in that same match. Earlier in the week, Connor Shanks delivered a spectacular volley in a 1-0 win over Garforth Town, highlighting his contribution to the team’s success.

In late September, Avenue also defeated Heaton Stannington 2-0, with Jack Normanton and Connor Shanks finding the net early in the first half. Normanton, making his league debut that day, has continued to impress with his goal-scoring ability.

Sheffield FC:

Sheffield FC have struggled to find consistency this season, with only one win to their name. However, as the world’s oldest football club, they are always up for a fight and will be looking to pull off an upset against an in-form Bradford side. Avenue must be wary of Sheffield’s ability to grind out results when it matters most.

Players to Watch:

  • Myles La Bastide: Coming off a two-goal performance against Stocksbridge, La Bastide has emerged as a key player for Avenue and will be eager to add to his tally.
  • Paddy Sykes: After scoring his 2nd league goal on Wednesday, Sykes’ presence up front will be crucial in tomorrow’s fixture.
  • Jack Normanton: After his early goal against Heaton Stannington, Normanton continues to pose a significant threat going forward, having settled well into Craig Elliott’s side.
  • Connor Shanks: Shanks has been consistent in front of goal, and his game-winning volley against Garforth Town could inspire more magic in tomorrow’s match.
  • Mark Beevers: The experienced defender has anchored Avenue’s backline and will be looking to guide the team to a third consecutive clean sheet.

League Standings:

  • Bradford (Park Avenue): 8th place, 16 points, +4 goal difference.
  • Sheffield FC: 21st place, 5 points, -6 goal difference.

Bradford will be looking to exploit Sheffield’s defensive vulnerabilities while continuing their own run of clean sheets. The Horsfall faithful will be in full voice, expecting another strong performance from Craig Elliott’s new-look squad.

Bradford (Park Avenue) Sign Defender Ben Blythe

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

Bradford (Park Avenue) are delighted to announce the signing of defender Ben Blythe on a deal until the end of the season. Born in Leeds, Blythe brings with him a wealth of experience from across multiple leagues, having honed his skills at both Doncaster Rovers and Swansea City.

Blythe first made a name for himself in the 2019-20 season, when he captained Doncaster Rovers’ under-18s to their first league title since the formation of their academy. His leadership and defensive prowess earned him a professional contract in July 2020.

Ben made his senior debut for Doncaster Rovers in May 2021 in a League One match against Peterborough United. Shortly thereafter, he gained additional first-team experience on loan at Farsley Celtic in the National League North. Following his return, Blythe made his first league start for Doncaster, facing Oxford United.

In March 2022, Ben joined Swansea City’s U23 side after impressing during a trial period. While with Swansea, he enjoyed a productive loan spell at Barry Town in the Cymru Premier, making 22 appearances and contributing with two goals and two assists.

Blythe’s versatility and experience will strengthen Bradford (Park Avenue)’s defensive options, and we are excited to see him bring his skills and leadership qualities to Horsfall Stadium.

Speaking on the signing, Head Coach Craig Elliott said:

“I have known about Ben for a good few years and followed his career after he left Doncaster Rovers to move to Swansea city.

“He is a talented player hungry to do well. As a cultured left footed defender he Will give us good balance. I am delighted our patience paid off and he will be a big asset to us this season.”

Welcome to Bradford (Park Avenue), Ben Blythe!

MATCH REPORT: Bradford (Park Avenue) 2-0 Heaton Stannington

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

Craig Elliott’s first home fixture in charge of his new-look squad ended in triumph as Bradford (Park Avenue) secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Heaton Stannington at the Horsfall Community Stadium. The win, highlighted by early goals from Jack Normanton and Connor Shanks, pushed Avenue up to 11th in the table with 10 points from 7 matches.

Avenue wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, finding the net within the opening minute. A miscommunication in Heaton Stannington’s defence saw Normanton, making his league debut, pounce on the loose ball and trickle it past the goalkeeper to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead. This marked Normanton’s second goal in as many games, showcasing his immediate impact on the team.

Just four minutes later, Avenue doubled their advantage. A clever pass down the line from Dan Francis found Paddy Sykes, who whipped a low cross into the box, leaving Connor Shanks with a simple tap-in to make it 2-0 by the 5th minute.

Bradford (Park Avenue) continued to press, with Shanks nearly adding another in the 17th minute from a dangerous free kick, but Heaton Stannington’s defence managed to clear. Normanton remained a constant threat, breaking in behind in the 20th minute and testing the visitors’ goalkeeper, Lewis Brass, who was forced to make a low save at the near post.

A mistake by Brass in the 24th minute almost led to another opportunity for Normanton, but the keeper recovered just in time to deny the forward a second. The visitors then had their first meaningful chance in the 27th minute, but Ed Hall made a comfortable save from a cross into the area.

As the half wore on, Avenue continued to press. In the 33rd minute, Sykes had a header on target from a corner, but Brass was once again equal to the task, forcing another corner that came to nothing. Heaton Stannington had another opportunity in the 40th minute, but their strike was straight into Hall’s gloves.

Second Half Control

The second half saw Myles La Bastide come on for Oli Norman as Avenue aimed to maintain their dominance. In the 63rd minute, Normanton thought he’d added to his tally, only to be flagged offside before his shot came off.

James Hanson replaced Normanton in the 70th minute, with La Bastide coming close to his first goal of the season just three minutes later, but his effort was saved brilliantly by Brass. Sonny Whittingham was also replaced by Joe Crosby as Avenue sought fresh legs to close out the game.

Heaton Stannington showed flashes of attacking intent, with Lamb sending a shot from the edge of the box over the bar in the 75th minute. However, Avenue continued to create chances, with Crosby forcing a brilliant save in the 82nd minute after some slick passing play.

In the 84th minute, Sykes came close to a third for Avenue, heading goalwards only for Brass to parry it away. The rebound fell to Mark Beevers, but his follow-up shot narrowly missed the target.

The final whistle blew with Avenue taking all three points from a comfortable 2-0 win, keeping a clean sheet and putting them in 11th place on the table. Craig Elliott’s new signings, including Josh Ashman, Mark Beevers, Sonny Whittingham, and the goalscoring Jack Normanton, all made a solid impression in their league debuts, offering plenty of promise for the weeks ahead.

Bradford (Park Avenue) will now head back on the road for their next two fixtures, starting with a trip to Garforth Town on Saturday, 5th October. This will be followed by a midweek clash against Stocksbridge Park Steels on Wednesday night.
