Avenue sign Championship goalkeeper in short term deal

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

We are extremely pleased to be able to announce that we have signed Will Huffer on a short term contract. Huffer is a product of the Leeds United academy and was released at the end of last season after a testing time where he had struggled with a long term wrist injury. During his time with the whites, the 6’4” ‘keeper played once for them at Elland Road in a Championship game and made 5 appearances for Barnet in the National League during a loan spell there. In a recent article Huffer discussed his ambition to just get back to training and playing and we have given him that opportunity in order to help him reach the undoubted level he is capable of. We hope he gets a smile back on his face and remains injury and pain free. Like our number 1 goalkeeper, Dan Atkinson, Huffer has also represented England at U16, U17 and U18 and we now have two incredibly talented young goalkeepers available for selection.

Will Huffer –

I’m really excited to sign for BPA and be able to help the team push forward and have a successful season. On a personal level, I’m grateful for the opportunity to play some football and hopefully I’ll be able to repay the trust by putting in some good performances’

Mark Bower –

We’re delighted to get Will signed up. He has been training with us recently after a spell out of the game and it has been obvious to see his natural ability. Will’s signing means we have two outstanding goalkeepers, both young and with bright futures in the game’

Live Streaming Update

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

As we strive hard to deliver a great streaming solution, adding team sheets, co-commentators and replays this weekend, we obviously had a few technical issues.

Unfortunately these were software related and outside of our control. We did manage to find a solution at halftime which means we should avoid the same issues in the future.

Sadly the issues meant we were unable to deliver the level of service we are aiming for so we have today processed full refunds to everyone whom purchased the Chorley game this weekend.

You will all receive an email to the address that you used to make the purchase. The refunds have all been processed and should be in your accounts in 7-10 days.

Once agin we apologise for the interruption and hope to see you all watching again on Wednesday when we entertain Boston United at the Horsfall

Bradford (Park Avenue) and Chorley FC played out an entertaining stalemate on Halloween at a windy Horsfall Stadium

The Avenue started well as the rain cleared in time for kick-off. With players playing in unfamiliar positions, Jordan Windass crossed the ball from his right wing but Adam Nowakowski’s header was saved by Matt Urwin from eight yards.

The away side weathered the early storm and started to create plenty of chances  themselves. Looking to their number nine Harry Cardwell, the Magpies worked the ball into his feet on several occasions but he was denied by Dan Atkinson.

Then, the striker had two great opportunities to give his side the lead. One header was saved expertly at the near post and another from a corner went wide, despite being unmarked in the penalty area.

As the half went on, it was Mark Bower’s men who could’ve opened the scoring. Isaac Marriott dribbled past three players and his final shot was pushed wide by Urwin from 20 yards.

Shortly after, Jamie Lyons was unlucky not to score. An excellent cross from Windass was toe-poked by the Academy starlet towards goal, forcing Urwin into another fine save from close range.

After the break, Chorley FC were quick out of the blocks and took the game to the hosts.

Within the opening couple of minutes, Elliott Newby tried to catch Atkinson out at his near post but the Avenue number one made a fine save with his outstretched leg.

Then, a big moment in the game saw striker Connor Hall brought down, 30 yards from goal, by Atkinson. The referee went to speak to his assistant and the goalkeeper a yellow card.

A few minutes later, defender Lewis Baines found himself in the penalty area, but his header from a Newby cross flashed wide from 12 yards.
The Avenue, having not conceded, grew in confidence and nearly broke the deadlock. Jake Hibbs pulled the ball back from the right wing to substitute Lewis Knight, who tapped the ball into the feet of Windass, but the winger’s right-footed shot was saved by Urwin.

Then, a second game-changing decision saw Atkinson give away a penalty, after bringing down Hall inside the box. Substitute Lewis Reilly stepped up and Atkinson, somehow, made a stunning save to his right and got back up to make an equally impressive block from the rebound.
With the final whistle approaching, the Avenue nearly snatched a dramatic winner.

Harry Boyes, once again impressing in the white and green jersey, received a neat pass from Nicky Clee, and the left back’s effort took a deflection which brushed past the post from 14 yards.

£10M emergency support package from The National Lottery gives lifeline to National League clubs while fans are unable to attend

The Avenue are hugely appreciative and would like to thank National Lottery players for their support during these challenging times. We’re grateful to benefit from a share of the £10M of funding that has been announced for 66 National League clubs as part of a unique partnership between the National League and The National Lottery which will ensure that this season can continue.

This money will enable us to continue to deliver training and facilities to our ladies, men’s, academy and junior teams for in the near future.

Martin Knight Director of Football Operations said:

“This helps support the vital work we do in and around the Horsfall. We run 20+ sides from U6 through to our ladies football team. We play a huge role in Bradford area, with over 100,000 people coming into contact with the club’s stadium and community programs. Protecting this, and the work of the other National League clubs, is essential for communities across the country. I can’t thank National Lottery players enough for this lifeline.”

The partnership with The National Lottery will benefit all clubs in the fifth and six tiers of English football, so that they can continue to play behind closed doors after the return of fans was paused due to rising infection rates. As a thank you, National Lottery players, who make a difference every time they buy a ticket, will also get a range of benefits – including free tickets once stadia are safe to reopen, grassroots football opportunities and VIP experiences at Wembley Stadium.

Nigel Railton, Chief Executive of National Lottery operator Camelot, said: “The National Lottery and its players have been making a huge difference to communities across the country for the past 26 years, so we’re delighted to be working with the National League to protect these all-important clubs and help them continue the vital work they carry out locally. They do a fantastic job and I can’t wait to cheer on my local National League side when fans are allowed to return.”

Saturday kick off time update

posted in: First Team News, News | 0

This weekends National League North league match against Chorley has been moved to a 1 pm kick off. After consultation with Chorley and the National League it has been agreed to move the kick off time for weekends match, due to some unforeseen challenges with the floodlights at the Horsfall. Whilst we are confident that the situation will be sorted for Saturday as a pragmatic precaution the game has been brought forward 2 hours. Mondays game against Boston United is unaffected as we will be able to have a workable solution in place ready for the game.

The good news is you will be able to enjoy the earlier kick off on our live streaming platform, which this week sees some updates. The gantry has now been erected, so that there will be an improved camera angle and removal of the restricted viewing of the lovely pavilion windows. We would also like to introduce one of our two new co-commentators along side our regular Mick ‘The game caller’ Gledhill, Josh is a sport journalist student and are we hope is going to add some insight and analysis to the commentary.

The pre-game amble will start at 12.45pm this Saturdayand you can watch all the live action by clicking on this link https://insight4.azurewebsites.net/stream/VGZkenp2 for only £5.

Two first half goals from Oli Johnson secured the Avenue a deserved victory against Hereford FC at Edgar Street.

The winger opened his account tapping home a cross from Brad Dockerty before back-heeling the ball into the bottom corner following a one-two with Adam Nowakowski.

With only a minute on the clock, Dockerty used his pace down the right wing and pulled an excellent cross into the box which was converted by Johnson from close range.

Back at the beginning of the year, Nicky Clee nearly scored an extraordinary goal from 45 yards at Edgar Street and the midfielder tried his luck with a similar attempt, but goalkeeper Paul White was alert to make sure the Avenue didn’t extend their lead.

It was clear to see the team from West Yorkshire had spoken about the mistakes made at Kettering and were dealing with the direct approach from the Bulls, with long throws and deep crosses cleared away from danger. They restricted the hosts to long range efforts but they were nearly punished.

Luke Haines decided to unleash a stunning strike from 25 yards which smashed against the woodwork.

A minute later, the Avenue won a free-kick, 20 yards from goal. Dockerty stepped up and struck an effort underneath the wall which was saved by White who quickly got up and blocked Luca Havern’s rebound from close range.

After watching Dockerty leave the field with an injury, the Avenue nearly conceded an equaliser as Lennell John-Lewis got the better of Mitch Lund and got away a shot on target, which was cleared off the line by the excellent left-back Harry Boyes.

The pressure continued as a loose ball from Lund was collected by midfielder Tom Owen-Evans who hit a lovely right-footed effort towards goal forcing Dan Atkinson into a fine save.

With the Bulls looking dangerous, the Avenue were clinical and scored a wonderful goal. Johnson dribbled past a couple of defenders, and after a neat flick from Nowakowski, the number seven, with his back to goal, produced a cheeky back-heel to give his side a two-goal lead.

From the restart, captain Jared Hodgkiss delivered a teasing ball into the penalty area and Dan Jones managed to get a toe to the ball but, luckily for the Avenue, brushed the post and went wide.

The second half got underway with Josh Gowling making a double substitution to get back into the game.

But Mark Bower’s side remained organised and disciplined, restricting their opponents in the final third. It was the team in amber who could’ve added a third.

Nowakowski, leading the line well all evening, tapped the ball into the path of his supporting midfielder Isaac Marriott. The young number four tried to curl a strike from 20 yards on target, but with White at full-stretch, the ball flew inches wide.

Twenty minutes later, Johnson could and probably should’ve had a hat-trick. A corner from Clee was flicked at the near post by Nowakowski to the unmarked winger, but off-balance, Johnson nodded over from eight yards.

As the clock approached 90 minutes, Bradford were resilient across the park, with the Bulls struggling to trouble Atkinson in the away goal.

The full time whistle was blown to the delight of the visitors and three fully deserved points headed back to the Horsfall.

Hereford FC: White, Hodgkiss (c), Haines, Grimes, Wright, A.Jones (Klukowski 46), Owen-Evans (Mooney 46), Lloyd (Coke 74), John-Lewis, Finn, D.Jones

Subs not used: McQuilkin, Digie

Yellows: Jones, Owen-Evans

Bradford (Park Avenue): Atkinson, Ross, Boyes, Marriott, Havern, Lund, Johnson (Downing 87), Hibbs, Nowakowski, Dockerty (Windass 28), Clee.

Subs not used: Toulson, Fawcett, Lyons

Goals: Johnson (1), (38)

Avenue and Trust Support Food Bank

posted in: News | 0

Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC and The Horsfall Community Trust (THCT) have joined forces to support a local food bank. Both organisations are based at Horsfall Community Stadium in South Bradford.

When learning that the Trust was making a £250 donation to the food bank the football club offered to match the donation. As a result, the food bank will receive a £500 donation.

There is an increasing call on food banks in the Bradford District. The support given by Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC and the Horsfall Community Trust is in recognition of the absence of free school meals during half term. It is the second donation made by the Trust.

The bowls hut in Harold Park, next to Horsfall Stadium, is being used as a food bank distribution point during half term and is operated by the Friends of Harold Park. It is one of several distribution points being used in the area.

Sandale Trust is producing food parcels. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so via the Trust’s website https://sandaletrust.org/ or by phoning 01274 270170.
